Xi vows more profound partnership with Russia
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has reiterated China’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Russia during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday, according to a statement from Moscow’s Foreign Ministry.
The meeting took place in Tianjin ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Council session. Xi praised the current state of relations between Beijing and Moscow, reaffirming his dedication to strengthening their comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation. He also welcomed the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting his “long-standing and good friendship” with him.
Although the Russian Foreign Ministry did not disclose details, Xi and Lavrov reportedly discussed a range of key international and regional issues. They also reviewed plans for future political engagements, including preparations for Putin’s visit to China. Putin is expected to participate in the SCO Heads of State Council meeting on September 1, as well as commemorative events on September 3 marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and Japan’s defeat.
Lavrov had earlier met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the current state of relations between their nations. Wang described the China-Russia relationship as “the most stable, mature, and strategically valuable” among major global powers, according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov is also scheduled to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Council on Tuesday, where discussions will focus on the organization’s future direction and preparations for the leaders’ summit in September, alongside other pressing regional and global issues.
