U.S. Rubio, Jordanian Officials Hold Talks on Syria Ceasefire
The officials reviewed the trilateral agreement between the US, Jordan, and Syria designed to uphold the ceasefire in Syria, the State Department said in a statement.
"The Secretary stressed the need for dialogue to address the present crisis in southern Syria and underscored the importance of protecting civilians on all sides," the statement said.
Additionally, "The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed the security situations in the region, including Gaza and the West Bank," it added.
This high-level discussion occurred amid intensifying concerns from humanitarian groups over widespread starvation in Gaza, where Palestinians face a blockade severely restricting food and aid deliveries.
On Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that 10 Palestinians died of starvation and malnutrition within the past 24 hours, raising the total fatalities since October 2023 to 111.
Since October 2023, Israel’s assault on Gaza has killed over 59,200 Palestinians—predominantly women and children—according to Gaza’s health authorities. The ongoing military campaign has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, collapsed its healthcare system, and caused extreme food shortages.
Ahead of the meeting, a reporter asked Rubio if the US is taking any concrete measures to halt starvation in Gaza, but he did not respond.
Safadi stated the talks covered efforts to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, halt escalations in the West Bank, and maintain the ceasefire in Suwayda, southern Syria.
Following the meeting, he posted on X: "We value US support to Jordan & are committed to working together to ensure peace & stability in our region."
