Ireland Demands Urgent Action on Gaza

(MENAFN) On Monday, Ireland expressed deep alarm regarding the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, emphasizing that the crisis has plunged to "new depths."

The Irish government advocated for utilizing this moment to push forward the long-standing two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Emer Higgins, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure, addressed a high-level gathering on Palestinian statehood held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

She stated that "the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached new depths, new depths of despair and new depths of misery," reflecting the gravity of the ongoing crisis.

Higgins extended gratitude to Türkiye for their "excellent cooperation" in their shared responsibilities.

As joint leaders of Working Group 6, Ireland and Türkiye have been actively engaging with member countries and relevant parties to address the issue more comprehensively.

She emphasized that the event, which is co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, presents a crucial chance to inject urgency into diplomatic efforts and showcase a joint commitment to finding a political resolution to what she described as an "absolutely devastating" conflict.

According to Higgins, famine conditions in Gaza are now affecting the broader civilian population, which she described as an "affront to our collective humanity."

She stressed the immediate necessity for a ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and a large-scale influx of humanitarian support into the enclave.

Reaffirming Ireland’s stance, Higgins stated that a two-state solution is the "only pathway" to achieving fair and enduring peace, aligning with established international law and UN resolutions.
