Indian FM denies allegations of negotiating truce between India, Pakistan

(MENAFN) Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has firmly denied assertions made by U.S. President Donald Trump that he facilitated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan by leveraging trade access during their brief military clash in May.

Speaking in the lower house of India’s parliament on Monday, Jaishankar addressed details of the confrontation—referred to as Operation Sindoor—launched by India following a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people.

“I want to make two things clear – one, at no stage in any conversation with the United States, was there any linkage with trade and what was going on,” Jaishankar said. “Secondly, there was no call between the prime minister and President Trump from the 22nd of April – when President Trump called up to convey his sympathy – and 17th of June when he called up the prime minister in Canada to explain why he could not meet him.”

The conflict between India and Pakistan spanned May 7 to 10, concluding with a ceasefire agreement. Prior to the official announcement, Trump posted on Truth Social claiming he had mediated the ceasefire after a “long night of talks.”

Trump and other U.S. officials have repeated this claim multiple times, including in an official court submission that stated the ceasefire resulted from Trump’s direct intervention, which allegedly included offering both countries “access to the American market.”

Earlier this month, Trump said five aircraft were shot down during the conflict but did not clarify which side they belonged to. He described the standoff as highly volatile, adding, “I called them and said, listen, no more trade. If you do this, you’re not going to be good... They’re both powerful nuclear nations and that would have happened.”

India’s foreign minister, however, has rejected these claims as inaccurate and reaffirmed that there was no such trade-related pressure or negotiation involving the U.S. during the conflict.
