Ukrainian drone raid causes power cut to 150,000 in Russia
The assault, which began late Monday and lasted more than an hour, involved dozens of UAVs targeting key infrastructure in Donetsk, Makeyevka, and Yasinovataya. Several electrical substations were hit, triggering widespread blackouts. Residents reported loud explosions and drone activity throughout the night, with significant damage seen in Donetsk’s Kuibyshevsky district and a drone reportedly crashing into a residential building in the Kievsky district. No civilian injuries were reported in Donetsk.
In the Rostov Region, Governor Yury Slyusar stated that drones were intercepted over five districts, though several still reached their targets. A drone strike in Volgodonsk killed one person when it hit a vehicle, and another caused damage to a house in Salsk. A fire also broke out at the local railway station.
A passenger train was moved to safety during the attack, and freight traffic at Salsk station was temporarily suspended after a drone caused a fire on a cargo train. The blaze was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
Ukraine has intensified its use of drones to target areas deep within Russian territory, frequently striking civilian infrastructure. Moscow has condemned these operations as deliberate acts of terrorism. In May, suspected Ukrainian sabotage of railway lines led to a passenger train derailment in Bryansk Region, resulting in seven deaths and numerous injuries.
