UN Security Council creates solutions urging peaceful settlement of disputes

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday urging all member states to prioritize peaceful methods for resolving disputes, reaffirming the foundational principles of the UN Charter.

The resolution, proposed by Pakistan and supported by all 15 Council members, encourages nations to make full use of the peaceful settlement tools outlined in Article 33 of the UN Charter. These include negotiation, inquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial processes, regional agency involvement, or any other peaceful means chosen by the parties involved.

The Council also committed to recommending the use of these approaches when suitable and expressed its willingness to apply the Charter’s investigation mechanism when necessary.

Member states were further urged to implement Security Council resolutions aimed at peaceful dispute resolution effectively. The resolution also called on regional and sub-regional organizations to intensify their roles in conflict resolution, in line with the Charter and relevant Council mandates.

Additionally, the resolution asks UN Secretary-General António Guterres to deliver a report and dedicated briefing within a year, offering concrete suggestions for strengthening these peace mechanisms and enhancing cooperation with regional bodies.
