Kim’s sister states US must acknowledge N-Korea as nuclear force
In a statement released by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Yo-jong warned against using the personal relationship between her brother and former US President Donald Trump as leverage to force denuclearization. She described such an approach as “a mockery” and stressed that North Korea is prepared to defend its nuclear status by any means necessary.
Kim also noted that while the two countries possessing nuclear weapons should avoid confrontation, failure by the US to accept the current reality will keep future DPRK-US meetings merely as a hopeful prospect for Washington.
Between 2018 and 2019, Trump and Kim Jong-un held three summits aiming to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, but no permanent agreement was reached, and talks eventually stalled. North Korea is estimated to possess around 50 nuclear weapons, which it views as crucial to deterring potential US and South Korean military actions near its borders.
