Medvedev informs Trump ‘Russia isn’t Israel or Iran’

(MENAFN) Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has issued a sharp warning to U.S. President Donald Trump, stressing that Russia should not be treated like Israel or Iran, and that ultimatums from Washington risk escalating toward open conflict.

The comments came after Trump demanded on Monday that Russia agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine within 10 to 12 days. Earlier in the month, he had threatened secondary sanctions against countries continuing to trade with Russia if a peace deal wasn't reached by the fall.

Responding on social media, Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, criticized Trump’s approach, calling it a dangerous game of ultimatums. “Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran,” he wrote, warning that each demand edges the U.S. closer to direct confrontation with Moscow. He also urged Trump not to repeat what he described as President Joe Biden’s mistakes.

Although Trump has revived diplomatic channels with Moscow and urged Ukraine to negotiate directly with Russia, he has also shown growing frustration with the slow progress. Following his initial warnings, Trump resumed U.S. military aid to Ukraine via NATO—something Russia strongly opposes.

Moscow has repeatedly condemned Western military support for Kiev, claiming it turns NATO members into active participants in what Russia views as a proxy war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated on Monday that Russia stands alone against the collective West but will not compromise on its core security demands—chief among them, preventing Ukraine from joining NATO and halting the alliance’s expansion near Russian borders.
