Aeroflot stops flights following supposed great hacking breach
On Monday, hackers from groups Silent Crow and Cyberpartisans BY said they had infiltrated Aeroflot’s corporate network for over a year, extracting more than 20 terabytes of data and destroying roughly 7,000 servers. They also claimed to have compromised employee computers, including those of senior management, and described the damage as “strategic,” estimating the cost of restoring operations could reach tens of millions of dollars.
Aeroflot acknowledged experiencing significant technical difficulties but has not provided full details of the breach. The airline warned travelers of likely schedule disruptions and later canceled 49 round-trip flights from Moscow, including routes to cities like Minsk, Yerevan, and Astana. Services operated by subsidiaries Rossiya and Pobeda have also been impacted.
The disruption has caused considerable congestion at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, where Aeroflot is headquartered. The airline advised passengers to avoid the airport unless absolutely necessary and noted that ticket rebooking was only available to select groups.
Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed the cyberattack and has opened a criminal investigation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the incident as alarming, emphasizing the persistent threat hackers pose to major public service providers.
This cyberattack adds to mounting challenges at Moscow airports, which have already faced frequent closures in recent months due to Ukrainian drone activity.
