Thailand, Cambodia Ceasefire Starts Off Disappointing
The fragile peace pact, intended to de-escalate the conflict, was mediated by Malaysia and came after a period of increasing hostilities.
The dispute between the two Southeast Asian neighbors is rooted in longstanding disagreements over colonial-era boundary lines.
Tensions reignited in late May and intensified into violent exchanges over the past week.
Malaysia stepped in as a crucial facilitator in reaching the ceasefire to avert further bloodshed.
By Tuesday morning, Thai military officials asserted their troops had complied fully with the terms of the agreement, while accusing Cambodian forces of launching “disturbances and weapon attacks in multiple areas.”
Thai Army representative Winthai Suvaree criticized the purported violations and stated that Thai soldiers had taken “appropriate retaliatory measures under the legitimate right of self-defense.”
Cambodian authorities rejected these claims.
Military spokesperson Maly Socheata affirmed that their forces “have strictly adhered to the orders and agreements under the ceasefire.”
In accordance with the agreement, military leaders from both nations gathered on Tuesday morning.
However, no immediate information was provided regarding the results of the meeting.
A joint border committee is anticipated to assemble in the coming week.
