Trump Administration Permits Religious Expression at Work
The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which serves as the primary human resources entity for the federal administration, circulated a comprehensive directive across all agencies.
This memorandum instructed federal departments "to take affirmative steps to protect religious expression in the workplace."
According to a statement released Monday by the OPM, "The memo provides clear guidance to ensure federal employees may express their religious beliefs through prayer, personal items, group gatherings, and conversations without fear of discrimination or retaliation."
The guidance is designed to protect religious practices and ensure they are respected throughout federal offices.
Director Scott Kupor emphasized the administration's stance by stating, “Federal employees should never have to choose between their faith and their career.”
He further added, “This guidance ensures the federal workplace is not just compliant with the law but welcoming to Americans of all faiths. Under President Trumpʼs leadership, we are restoring constitutional freedoms and making government a place where people of faith are respected, not sidelined.”
As outlined in the memorandum, civil rights statutes and First Amendment provisions affirm the lawful entitlement of federal workers to communicate their religious perspectives while on duty.
The new policy grants employees the liberty to converse about religion, take part in joint religious practices, and showcase religious items at their workspaces.
