US, Russia Space Leaders Meet After Eight Years
This marks the first face-to-face engagement between the leaders of the American and Russian space agencies in nearly a decade.
In a declaration issued on Tuesday, the Russian space authority stated that the two officials will address the prospects of the International Space Station (ISS).
Topics on the agenda include a potential extension of the station’s active use, along with plans for its eventual controlled deorbiting and disposal in a predetermined area of the ocean.
Bakanov indicated that a strategy has already been created, and the entire undertaking should span about two and a half years.
The discussions will also cover the ongoing agreement allowing Russian cosmonauts to travel aboard US-operated commercial spacecraft, while American astronauts continue to use Russia’s Soyuz launch vehicles, according to Roscosmos.
Furthermore, Bakanov is set to meet the astronauts assigned to NASA’s Crew-11 expedition to the ISS.
The team is composed of Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, American astronauts Zena Cardman and Michael Fincke, as well as Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui.
Their launch aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon Endeavour is planned for no sooner than July 31.
As part of his agenda in Houston, Bakanov will explore the NASA Johnson Space Center, which serves as the agency’s main site for astronaut preparation, space mission control, and extended human spaceflight development.
Additionally, he will tour Boeing’s production site, where the CST-100 Starliner—an orbital transport vehicle—is currently in the works.
