Historic Moscow, Pyongyang Flight Lands Successfully
This significant event marks the launch of a direct air link between the two capitals for the first time in over 75 years.
Historically, the sole direct aviation connection between Russia and North Korea had linked the capital city of Pyongyang with Vladivostok, a prominent hub in Russia’s Far Eastern region.
That route, managed by the North Korean national airline Air Koryo, remained the only option until now.
The reestablishment of regular service between Moscow and Pyongyang is seen by officials as a sign of deepening bilateral relations.
Earlier this month, the Russian airline Nordwind secured clearance to launch this new flight route.
According to plans, the airline intends to operate monthly round-trip services.
The maiden voyage, conducted using a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, transported both Russian dignitaries and civilian travelers.
“This flight marks a milestone in the modern relationship between our nations,” declared Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Aleksandr Kozlov.
He also serves as a co-chair of a joint governmental body focused on collaboration with North Korea.
Upon arrival at Pyongyang International Airport, Kozlov was welcomed by North Korean Minister for Foreign Economic Affairs Yun Jong-ho, who serves as his counterpart in the cooperative commission.
Yun referred to the newly launched air link as a move that promotes “the prosperity of the peoples of our two nations.”
