Australian PM states Israel 'quite clearly' breaching international law
He stressed the importance of rules of engagement designed to protect innocent lives and said that Israel’s March decision to halt food deliveries constitutes a clear breach of international law. "International law says that you can't hold innocent people responsible for what is a conflict," he added.
Regarding France’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state, Albanese said Australia does not plan to follow suit immediately but remains open to doing so if certain conditions ensuring the state’s viability are met. "We won't make any decision as a gesture, but as a constructive step forward if circumstances allow," he explained.
Albanese emphasized that a viable two-state solution must include plans for rebuilding Gaza and the West Bank and must address the issue of settlements. He expressed deep concern about the suffering of civilians, stating, "A one-year-old boy is not a Hamas fighter. The civilian deaths in Gaza are completely unacceptable and indefensible."
Since October 2023, over 59,700 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have been killed in Gaza amid Israeli military operations that have devastated the territory, collapsed its healthcare system, and caused severe food shortages.
Gaza is currently experiencing one of its worst humanitarian crises, worsened by border closures and bans on food and medicine since early March.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
