Two-state solution is goal
Speaking after a ceremony in Istanbul, Tatar highlighted that, with Türkiye’s backing over the past five years, the TRNC has gained stronger international recognition through a two-state policy. He pointed to the TRNC's growing presence in international organizations such as the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as key milestones in their foreign policy success.
Tatar warned against the risks of a federal solution, arguing it would marginalize Turkish Cypriots, eliminate Türkiye’s guarantor role, and erode Turkish influence in the Eastern Mediterranean. He emphasized that the TRNC’s strategic value extends beyond its territory, encompassing maritime zones, continental shelf rights, and airspace.
Echoing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Tatar declared that the TRNC would remain a prominent Turkish presence in the region. At a later event commemorating the 51st anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation—celebrated as Peace and Freedom Day—he affirmed that Turkish troops would continue to serve as a stabilizing force in Northern Cyprus.
Tatar stressed that any future agreement on Cyprus must be based on dignity and mutual respect, preserving Türkiye’s guarantor status and maintaining a Turkish military presence.
He also noted the strengthening economic partnership between the TRNC and Türkiye, with annual trade approaching $3 billion. Highlighting international trade with over 100 countries, he cited recent progress in tourism, including developments related to the partial reopening of the Closed Maras area to the public.
