TSMC Becomes First Asian Firm to Reach USD1T Market Value

(MENAFN) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s top chip producer, has become the first Asian company to surpass a market valuation of $1 trillion, based on recent trading data. The milestone was first hit on Friday and has since held steady.

This rapid valuation increase is driven by soaring worldwide demand for cutting-edge AI chips, placing TSMC alongside leading U.S. tech giants such as Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta in the exclusive trillion-dollar market capitalization group. The only other non-U.S. company in this elite club is Saudi Arabia’s oil giant, Saudi Aramco.

TSMC is a vital component of the global technology supply chain, manufacturing semiconductors for key American clients including Nvidia and Apple. Reuters reports that North American customers are expected to contribute about 70% of TSMC’s total revenue in 2024. Just last week, the company raised its forecast for full-year revenue growth to approximately 30%.

Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs up to 100% on foreign-made semiconductors — including those from Taiwan — as part of an effort to boost domestic manufacturing.

In March, TSMC announced a significant expansion of its U.S. investments, committing an additional $100 billion atop an earlier pledge of $65 billion for advanced semiconductor production in Phoenix, Arizona. The company has hailed this initiative as the “largest-ever single foreign direct investment in US history.”

When Trump unveiled the so-called ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs in April, semiconductors were notably excluded.

Taiwan, a self-governed island, is claimed by China, which views it as part of its territory. Beijing continues to demand reunification and opposes any foreign interference.
