Shooter opens fire inside a high-rise office building in Manhattan

(MENAFN)
A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening, killing four people, including a New York City police officer, before fatally shooting himself, according to authorities.

The incident took place around 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story office building that houses major companies such as JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, KPMG, Blackstone, and the NFL. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the building carrying an M4 rifle and began shooting in the lobby.

After the initial shooting, Tamura made his way to the 33rd floor, where he barricaded himself. Police later found him dead from what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Officials confirmed there was no further threat to the public, stating that the situation had been contained and the shooter acted alone.

Footage broadcast by Fox News and local media showed heavily armed NYPD and Sheriff’s Department officers evacuating employees, securing each floor, and assisting the wounded. Crowds of workers were seen leaving the building with their hands raised. At least one victim was carried out by officers and treated on the ground.

The FBI’s New York Field Office responded to assist with the investigation. Deputy Director Dan Bongino referred to the building as an “active crime scene” on social media, while New York Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area and follow police instructions.

Authorities later revealed that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooter had a specific target in the building or was acting at random. As of Monday night, the motive remained unclear.
