Serbian Leader is hopeful of meeting Putin soon

(MENAFN) Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has expressed hope of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin during a trip to China in early September, where both leaders are expected to attend events hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Speaking Sunday during a visit to the village of Banstol, Vucic told reporters he would be in China from September 1 to 6 and was informed that Putin would “probably” be present as well.

“Maybe I’ll meet with him,” Vucic said, according to the Serbian outlet Tanjug.

The occasion will mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, commemorated on September 3. Vucic said he had also been invited to remain in Beijing for another high-level diplomatic gathering later that week.

“They announced to me that there will be a dinner on the 5th in particular, and the 3rd is for Xi Jinping, where everyone will be,” he said. “I hear that maybe [U.S. President Donald] Trump will come, I’m not sure.”

Vucic last met with Putin in May during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, despite health issues that forced him to cancel a planned meeting with Trump in Florida. At the time, he reaffirmed Serbia’s commitment to continued energy cooperation with Russia.

Serbia is among the few European countries that has refused to impose sanctions on Moscow or align itself fully with Western positions on the Ukraine conflict. Vucic has previously acknowledged ongoing EU pressure for Serbia to shift away from its stance of neutrality and reduce ties with Russia.
