Putin Voices Openness to Meet Zelensky
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to hold talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, but only after all required groundwork is completed by the delegations from both nations, Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday.
Zelensky has asserted that meaningful discussions with Russia can only happen if both he and Putin are personally engaged.
However, Moscow continues to argue that Zelensky’s authority is questionable and insists that any such encounter should only occur once the two sides have broadly reached an understanding on a peace settlement.
During a standard media briefing, Peskov reaffirmed Moscow’s position, emphasizing that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky would only be feasible “after the necessary work on the expert level is done, and sufficient distance is crossed.”
Zelensky, whose presidential mandate officially ended last year, has remained in office despite constitutional guidelines in Ukraine which stipulate that power should pass to the parliamentary speaker in such situations.
Although the country’s laws ban elections during martial law and allow emergency term extensions for legislators, they do not include such provisions for the presidency.
While Russia views Zelensky’s contested position as a domestic Ukrainian issue, it has warned that the validity of any international agreements he enters into might be legally questioned.
