Putin advices Trump to avoid 'excessive expectations'
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks expressing “disappointment” over the stalled progress in Ukraine, advising him to temper expectations and focus on restarting negotiations.
“Disappointments often stem from unrealistic expectations—this is a well-known truth,” Putin stated during a press conference in Valaam. He emphasized that resolving such complex issues requires either open or discreet dialogue and renewed his call to resume talks.
Reaffirming Russia’s commitment to a peaceful resolution, Putin said Moscow had proposed the formation of three working groups with Kyiv. He confirmed Ukraine initially responded positively to the idea.
Highlighting the value of continued diplomacy, Putin said that talks are always necessary and timely. “We’re prepared to wait if Ukraine’s leadership feels the moment isn’t right,” he noted.
He also pointed to the progress made during three previous negotiation rounds in Istanbul since May, which had helped address several humanitarian concerns.
Asked about the status of Russia’s conditions for a long-term ceasefire, Putin said they remain unchanged, clarifying that they represent strategic goals rather than strict conditions.
He stressed that Russia’s key objective is to address what he called “the root causes” of the conflict—something he previously outlined in a June meeting with foreign ministry officials.
