Iran honors first anniversary of Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination

(MENAFN) On the first anniversary of Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination, Iranian leaders and institutions issued strong statements condemning the killing and reaffirming their support for the Palestinian cause.

Haniyeh, who was killed on July 31, 2024, during an official visit to Tehran for President Masoud Pezeshkian’s inauguration, was honored by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, President Pezeshkian, and the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) in separate messages released Friday.

The Foreign Ministry referred to him as a “steadfast mujahid” and declared: “The path of Martyr Haniyeh and other martyrs of the Resistance will continue with strength until the liberation of the oppressed Palestinian people from the yoke of the occupiers and the realization of their right to self-determination.”

The ministry called the assassination in the Iranian capital a "colossal crime" and described it as a flagrant breach of international law and Iranian sovereignty. It framed the killing as part of a broader campaign by Israel to suppress the Palestinian people, accusing the Israeli government of pursuing a "colonial scheme."

It further demanded accountability for those behind the attack, accusing Western nations, especially the United States, of complicity by supplying Israel with political and military support. The ministry stressed that Iran reserves the right to respond firmly in self-defense to any aggression.

President Pezeshkian also marked the occasion on social media, writing: “Last year, on my first day of responsibility, our official guest, the freedom-loving brother 'Ismail Haniyeh,' was assassinated by the Zionist regime. This regime's war crimes are a disgrace to humanity.” He reiterated Iran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The IRGC issued its own tribute, praising the people of Gaza for their “resistance and resilience against genocide.” The force described their struggle as a clear sign of their dedication to “liberating Palestine and Al-Quds,” emphasizing that Haniyeh’s mission would continue.
