Kremlin Urges Restrains After Trump Submarines Statements
Last Friday, Trump revealed on Truth Social that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to strategic locations amid escalating tensions with Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chair of Russia's Security Council.
By Sunday, Trump confirmed that the submarines had reached their designated locations, just two days after ordering their deployment.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized caution regarding nuclear-related comments: "We are very careful about any statements related to nuclear issues ... And, of course, we believe that everyone should be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric."
In a related development, Peskov did not dismiss the possibility of a meeting this week between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. He described Moscow’s engagement with Witkoff as “important, meaningful and very useful.”
Trump had earlier indicated that Witkoff might visit Russia this week. The envoy’s last trip to Moscow on April 25 included discussions with Putin about potential direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.
On July 28, Trump shortened his deadline for Moscow to end the conflict in Ukraine from 50 days to “10 or 12 days,” citing frustration over what he called "Moscow's lack of willingness to compromise." On the same day, Medvedev accused Trump of engaging in an “ultimatum game with Russia,” condemning his threat as “a step towards war ... with his own country.”
