Trump imposes steep tariffs on 6 Arab nations
According to an executive order from the White House, Syria will face the steepest tariff at 41%, followed by Iraq at 35%. Libya and Algeria were each hit with a 30% rate, Tunisia with 25%, and Jordan with 15%.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised the move, writing: “Tariffs are making America GREAT & RICH Again.” He told NBC News the rollout was proceeding “very well, very smoothly,” and confirmed that the tariffs would remain in place.
The order also imposes tariffs on other nations, including 39% on Switzerland, 30% on South Africa, 50% on Brazil, 20% on Taiwan, and 15% on Türkiye. A standard 10% tariff will apply to countries not specifically listed. These measures are set to take effect on August 7.
The White House described the tariffs as a push for “reciprocity and fairness” in trade, with rates ranging from 10% to 41%. Trump has framed the move as essential for boosting domestic manufacturing and protecting national security.
However, the announcement triggered unease in global markets, with experts warning of potential supply chain disruptions and inflationary risks. Economists noted that the Middle East, already grappling with economic instability and high unemployment, could suffer significantly under the new trade rules.
