Lithuanian Government Falls After Premier’s Resignation
"Having made the decision to resign as prime minister, I announce that the 19th Government of Lithuania is resigning," Paluckas declared during a Cabinet session, as reported by a news agency.
Paluckas is expected to formally hand in his resignation to President Gitanas Nauseda.
The president is then anticipated to nominate a new prime ministerial candidate for parliamentary approval within a 15-day window.
Following parliamentary endorsement, the incoming head of government will have another 15 days to unveil their ministerial lineup and submit a governance plan.
The current governing coalition—comprising the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the Nemunas Dawn party, and the Democrats “For Lithuania”—which currently holds 86 out of 141 seats in the legislature, is likely to undergo adjustments once the incoming administration is established.
Paluckas declared both his departure as head of government and as leader of the LSDP last Thursday.
This followed President Nauseda’s ultimatum: clarify public concerns regarding previous commercial engagements and supposed ethical infractions within two weeks or step down.
