Poll Shows Hesitancy Among Germans to Defend Country in War
According to a survey conducted by the Forsa Institute, just 16% of Germans would take such a definitive stance.
The findings underscore a broad unwillingness among the public to engage in armed defense, despite consistent alerts from both governmental and military officials stressing that Germany must be ready for a potential armed confrontation.
This reluctance suggests a significant gap between official preparedness efforts and public sentiment.
The data shows that a substantial majority—59%—of those questioned stated they would “probably not” or “definitely not” be willing to defend Germany with force if it came under attack.
This hesitance was even more pronounced among female respondents, with 72% expressing unwillingness.
While only 16% said they would “definitely” fight for their country, an extra 22% reported they would “probably” do so.
In total, 38% of those surveyed expressed at least some level of willingness to engage in armed defense.
The representative study, commissioned by RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, included input from around 1,000 German citizens and was conducted between July 28 and 29.
Germany has ramped up its defense expenditures following the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.
Intelligence services and military officials in the country have continuously cautioned that Russia may be capable of launching an offensive against a NATO member within the coming five years.
