Australian Premier Confirms Country’s Independence

(MENAFN) Australia remains a “sovereign nation,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated on Monday in response to speculation about potential retaliation from the United States should Canberra move to recognize a Palestinian state.

"We are a sovereign nation. Australia makes our decisions as a sovereign nation," Albanese declared during a press briefing in Canberra, as cited by a news agency.

The remarks came a day after a significant turnout of demonstrators in Sydney, where thousands of Australians participated in a mass pro-Palestinian rally.

Albanese emphasized that the protest on Sunday was “peaceful and was an opportunity for people to express their concerns about what is happening in Gaza.”

According to reports, he is currently laying the foundation for a "historic" policy shift concerning Palestine, which observers suggest “is only a matter of when and how.”

Although Canberra has yet to formally recognize Palestine, several of its key partners — such as France, Canada, and the United Kingdom — have recently voiced intentions to officially acknowledge Palestinian statehood during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

These declarations by Paris and Ottawa have reportedly provoked displeasure from Washington.

Additional reports on Monday indicated that Albanese, who has previously accused Tel Aviv of violating international law and “stealing” civilian lives in Gaza, may be contemplating a direct phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
