US Envoy Urges Calm Amid Tensions in Suwayda
He called on all parties involved to engage in calm discussions and peaceful negotiations.
Violence broke out on Sunday in the southern region of Suwayda when illegal armed groups, reportedly under the leadership of Druze figure Hikmat al-Hijri, breached a standing truce.
The assault led to the death of one Syrian security personnel and caused injuries to several others.
Meanwhile, in the northern city of Manbij, a military site was targeted by a missile attack allegedly carried out by the YPG/PKK-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), according to an official news service.
“Disturbing violence erupted yesterday in Suwayda and in Manbij. Diplomacy is the best way to stop violence and build a peaceful, lasting solution,” said Barrack, who also holds the post of US Ambassador to Türkiye, through his official account on X.
The American envoy noted that Washington was “proud to have helped mediate a solution in Suwayda” and is now “co-mediating with France the reintegration of the northeast into a unified Syria.”
He appealed to all factions to “uphold calm and resolve differences through dialogue, not bloodshed,” underlining that “Syria deserves stability” and “Syrians deserve peace.”
Suwayda has maintained a ceasefire since July 19, after a week of intense conflict between Druze militias and Bedouin tribal fighters that resulted in 426 fatalities, according to the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights.
