Trump vows to work on plan to 'get people fed' in Gaza
In a brief phone interview with Axios, Trump stated, “We want to help people live. We want to get people fed. It’s something that should’ve happened a long time ago.”
His remarks came during a visit to Gaza aid centers by White House envoy Steve Witkoff and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee. The centers are operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by both the US and Israel. Although Trump said he had not yet received a full update on their visit, he praised Witkoff for his efforts.
Trump had previously acknowledged the severity of the crisis, describing the starvation in Gaza as “terrible.”
The visit comes amid growing criticism of the US-Israeli approach to aid distribution in Gaza, with many Palestinians accusing the GHF system of enabling displacement and endangering civilians. Since May, over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed while trying to access humanitarian aid, according to local reports.
Since Israel’s offensive began on October 7, 2023, more than 60,000 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have been killed, and widespread destruction has triggered acute food shortages. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that hunger-related deaths have claimed the lives of at least 154 people, including 89 children.
