US Special Envoy for Syria is concerned about renewed acts of violence
“Disturbing violence erupted yesterday in Suwayda and in Manbij,” Barrack wrote on X. “Diplomacy is the best way to stop violence and build a peaceful, lasting solution.”
The unrest in Suwayda reportedly broke out when armed groups led by prominent Druze religious figure Hikmat al-Hijri violated a local ceasefire, resulting in the death of a Syrian security member and injuries to others, according to official sources.
Meanwhile, a rocket was fired by the YPG/PKK-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on a military target in the northern city of Manbij, the state news agency SANA reported.
Barrack, who also serves as the US Ambassador to Türkiye, highlighted Washington’s role in brokering past ceasefires. “We’re proud to have helped mediate a solution in Suwayda,” he said, adding that the US is now “co-mediating with France the reintegration of the northeast into a unified Syria.”
He urged all involved parties to avoid further escalation. “Syria deserves stability, and Syrians deserve peace,” he said. “All sides must uphold calm and resolve differences through dialogue, not bloodshed.”
Suwayda had been under a fragile ceasefire since July 19 after a week of intense fighting between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes that killed 426 people, according to the UK-based Syrian Network for Human Rights.
