New Zealand women gets detained for putting two years old girl in luggage
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday at a bus stop in Kaiwaka, a small town in the northern part of the country. A fellow passenger had asked the driver for access to the luggage compartment when the driver noticed one of the bags moving suspiciously.
“When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl,” police said in a statement.
The child was reportedly very hot but appeared physically unharmed. She was immediately taken to a hospital for a full medical evaluation.
Authorities have not confirmed the nature of the relationship between the woman and the child. The suspect is due to appear in North Shore District Court on Monday, facing charges of ill-treatment or neglect of a child.
Police praised the bus driver for acting quickly and potentially preventing a much more serious outcome.
“We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action,” the statement added.
