U.S. Says India Indirectly Funding Ukraine Conflict Through Oil

(MENAFN) Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has charged India with indirectly funding Russia’s war in Ukraine by continuing to import oil from Moscow.

Speaking in a televised interview on Sunday, Miller discussed the Biden administration’s recent move to enforce 25% tariffs on Indian imports, along with an undisclosed sanction tied to New Delhi’s defense and trade relations with Russia.

”What he (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia,” Miller told media. “People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That's an astonishing fact.”

Just days earlier, President Trump lashed out at India on his Truth Social platform, slamming its ongoing cooperation with Moscow. “I don’t care what India does with Russia,” he wrote. “They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world.”

The U.S. president has also warned of imposing 100% tariffs on exports from any nation continuing to buy oil from Russia, unless a comprehensive peace agreement is reached to end the war in Ukraine.

Adding to the criticism, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio last week expressed disapproval over India’s purchases of discounted Russian crude, asserting in a televised interview that such deals were “helping to sustain the Russian war effort.” He described the energy trade as “a point of irritation” in Washington’s dealings with New Delhi.

India, under increasing scrutiny from Western nations, has defended its expanded imports of Russian oil. Officials argue the purchases have played a crucial role in stabilizing global crude markets by preventing dramatic price surges.
