Taliban Finalizes USD10B Energy Deal

(MENAFN) Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government finalized a monumental $10 billion agreement on Saturday aimed at generating, transmitting, and distributing 10,000 megawatts of electricity across the country.

The deal was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Water and Energy and Azizi Energy Private Company, as announced in a statement by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs on X.

According to the statement, the multi-billion dollar initiative will enable Afghanistan to become fully energy self-reliant within 7 to 10 years, with the capacity to export surplus electricity abroad. “Within 7 to 10 years, Afghanistan will achieve complete self-sufficiency in electricity production and will even begin exporting it abroad,” the statement read.

In addition to bolstering national energy independence, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities for millions of citizens, the statement continued.

This agreement stands out as one of the most significant economic undertakings since the Taliban regained control in August 2021.

Azizi Energy will harness gas, coal, hydropower, wind, and solar resources from different regions of the country to produce electricity, according to the company’s CEO, Mirwais Azizi.

The blueprint for the ambitious project is slated for completion within six months. In the initial phase, the focus will be on launching electricity generation initiatives producing between 2,000 and 3,000 megawatts.
