Australian PM dismisses speculations of US interference with nation’s sovereignty
“We are a sovereign nation. Australia makes our decisions as a sovereign nation,” Albanese told reporters in Canberra, as quoted by a news agency.
His remarks came in response to a question about whether the United States might retaliate if Australia joined a growing list of Western countries moving toward recognizing an independent Palestinian state.
The comments follow a large pro-Palestinian demonstration in Sydney on Sunday. Albanese called the march “peaceful” and said it was “an opportunity for people to express their concerns about what is happening in Gaza.” Organizers claimed the rally drew over 300,000 people, while police estimated the number at around 90,000.
Canberra has not yet formally recognized Palestine, but reports suggest the government is preparing for a “historic” policy shift — one insiders say is now a question of timing and process.
Several close Australian allies, including France, Canada, and the UK, have signaled plans to recognize Palestinian statehood ahead of a key vote at the UN General Assembly in September. Those moves have reportedly provoked displeasure in Washington.
Albanese has previously accused Israel of breaching international law and “stealing” innocent lives in Gaza. Reports on Monday indicated he is considering a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in response to mounting public pressure, including from within his own Labour Party.
The Sydney rally, dubbed the “March for Humanity,” was seen as a major turning point in the national conversation. It brought together politicians, activists, and even WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and formal recognition of Palestinian statehood.
