Supreme Court Orders House Arrest for Bolsonaro
The mandate was issued on Monday amid Bolsonaro’s ongoing trial over allegations that he orchestrated a coup attempt.
Justice Moraes defended the decision by referring to Bolsonaro’s involvement—via a video address—in a public rally conducted on Sunday at Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro.
The judge emphasized that this appearance breached restrictions placed on the former president the previous month, which included a prohibition on social media use and a requirement to wear an electronic ankle monitor.
The video clip, though uploaded by Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, was deleted shortly afterward.
However, Moraes insisted in his verdict that Bolsonaro’s role was “covert” and displayed “unlawful behavior.”
"Acting illegally, the accused Jair Messias Bolsonaro addressed the protesters...intentionally and consciously producing prefabricated material so that his supporters continued their attempts to coerce the Federal Supreme Court and obstruct justice," the court document noted.
"Justice will not allow an accused to be considered a fool, believing that he will remain unpunished because he has political and economic power," it further stated.
As part of the house arrest terms, Bolsonaro is forbidden from receiving visitors, except for legal representatives or individuals sanctioned by the Supreme Court.
Federal law enforcement officials were also ordered to confiscate all mobile devices from his residence.
The demonstration that prompted this judicial response brought together thousands of Bolsonaro loyalists across several cities in Brazil.
The protests were reportedly ignited by recent penalties imposed by the United States on both Brazil and Justice Moraes, who is presiding over the case against the far-right former head of state.
