Iran gets hit with earthquake, no reports of injury
(MENAFN) A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Iran early Tuesday morning, with its epicenter located about 139 kilometers (86 miles) south of the city of Bam in Kerman province. The tremor occurred at 8:36 a.m. local time (0506 GMT) at a depth of approximately 56.7 kilometers (35.2 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or structural damage. Iran, which lies on several major fault lines, is highly prone to seismic activity and has experienced numerous destructive earthquakes in recent decades.
One of the deadliest in recent history occurred in 2003, when a 6.6-magnitude quake struck Bam, killing at least 34,000 people. More recently, in July 2022, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the southern province of Hormozgan, resulting in five deaths and over 80 injuries.
