Southern China Reports Surge in Chikungunya Cases

(MENAFN) Reported chikungunya infections in southern China have soared beyond 7,000, according to local media coverage.

The majority of these cases have been concentrated in Guangdong province, particularly in the city of Foshan, as reported by a state-owned outlet.

In response to the outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 2 travel health notice on Friday, urging enhanced precautions for travelers headed to the affected regions.

The virus's growing presence has also led to Hong Kong identifying its first imported chikungunya case in six years. According to a statement released by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the patient likely contracted the virus during a visit to Foshan.

Chikungunya is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. As described by the CDC, typical symptoms include joint pain and fever.

While fatalities from the disease are uncommon, vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk.
