US Revokes Colombia’s Certification in Anti-Drug Campaign

(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Monday that the United States has opted to revoke Colombia’s certification as a partner in the battle against narcotics trafficking.

The declaration, delivered during a Cabinet gathering, was made just moments before the Trump administration officially confirmed the move.

"The United States is decertifying us after dozens of deaths of police officers, soldiers and ordinary people trying to prevent cocaine from reaching them," Petro stated.

He added, "Everything we do really has nothing to do with the Colombian people, but rather to prevent American society from smearing their noses."

On the same day, a memorandum endorsed by President Donald Trump identified Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar, Colombia, and Venezuela as nations that have "failed demonstrably" to comply with their commitments under global anti-narcotics treaties.

This classification carries the potential to impact financial aid for these countries.

Nonetheless, Washington invoked a "waiver" to spare all named countries — apart from Afghanistan — from punitive measures.

This renders the decertification conditional, giving the US flexibility to withhold sanctions due to strategic, economic, or security considerations.

Petro emphasized that Colombia has worked relentlessly to disrupt the flow of narcotics to the United States, underscoring that "cocaine is the drug of capitalism."
