U.S. House Committee Unveils New Epstein Files
(MENAFN) The US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform escalated its probe into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein by releasing fresh documents Tuesday.
Led by Republican Rep. James Comer, the panel published the transcript of former Attorney General William Barr’s deposition, shedding light on key interactions involving President Donald Trump.
During his private August testimony, Barr was asked if he recalled notifying Trump that his name appeared in Justice Department files on Epstein.
"I didn't have that kind of conversation with him," Barr stated, according to the transcript.
This contrasts with multiple reports, including one by The Wall Street Journal, which revealed that Attorney General Pam Bondi informed Trump in May that his name was mentioned several times in Epstein-related files.
Barr recounted only two discussions with Trump about Epstein.
"And the President said something to the effect that he had broken off with Epstein long ago and that he had actually pushed him out of Mar-a-Lago," Barr stated.
In a separate exchange involving multiple individuals, Barr recalled the President mentioning he had severed ties with Epstein long ago and "that he had actually pushed him out of Mar-a-Lago."
The committee also released letters from former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzalez and Jeff Sessions denying any relevant knowledge tied to the federal investigation of Epstein and his convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Comer summarized these developments in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, highlighting the committee’s persistent pursuit of transparency.
Bipartisan efforts continue in Congress to compel the full release of federal records concerning the Epstein case.
Epstein died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving minors in New York and Florida. Epstein had pleaded not guilty.
