Ryabkov Doubts Trilateral Talks Between Russia, US, Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated on Tuesday that while Moscow and Washington might engage in discussions on bilateral ties before autumn ends, a three-way summit that includes Ukraine appears improbable.
In a conversation with a Russian state news outlet, Ryabkov noted that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could potentially convene on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, which began on Sept. 9.
The arrangement of the encounter “is in the process of discussion. I think the chances (for it to happen) are high," he remarked.
Concerning talks with Ukraine, Ryabkov pointed out that Kyiv has yet to reply to a Russian suggestion presented during the third round of Russia-Ukraine peace discussions in Istanbul on July 23.
On the subject of a possible fourth round of bilateral consultations designed to ease diplomatic frictions between Moscow and Washington, Ryabkov revealed that the session has been delayed several times.
He explained that these postponements were not simply organizational but deliberate, as Russia aims for meaningful progress instead of "stomping on the spot."
He underlined that, provided there is political will, groundwork could be prepared behind closed doors for subsequent moves.
"If we talk about some time frames, we aim to try to hold such an event at least by the end of autumn," he said.
Commenting on Washington’s stance toward Ukraine, Ryabkov remarked that although not all of the US proposals satisfy Moscow, overall they appear to be rooted in "common sense."
