Gerasimov comments on Russia’s new unlimited-rang cruise missile

(MENAFN) Russia’s military leadership announced that its new nuclear-powered cruise missile, known as the Burevestnik, has the ability to slip past missile-defence systems, the Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said during a briefing at a Russian Army command post visited by President Vladimir Putin.

Gerasimov told officials that a test of the system was conducted on October 21 and that the weapon completed a multi-hour flight covering some 14,000 kilometres, a distance he stressed should not be read as the missile’s maximum reach. “The technical characteristics of the Burevestnik missile make it capable of striking highly protected targets at any distance with guaranteed accuracy,” he said. He added that throughout the test the missile executed prescribed vertical and horizontal maneuvers and “successfully performed all designated vertical and horizontal maneuvers, demonstrating its strong ability to evade anti-missile and air defense systems.”

Described by Russian authorities as a nuclear-powered, effectively unlimited-range strategic cruise missile, the Burevestnik is intended to attack hardened, high-value targets such as fortified bunkers. Officials claim it cannot be picked up by standard radar and that only specialized space-based sensors can follow it during the initial launch and boost phases.

President Putin, who first announced the programme in 2018, reiterated his view that the system’s non ballistic flight profile and near endless range make it unlike conventional weapons, saying the Burevestnik is a “unique product that no one else in the world has,” while acknowledging that “much work” still lies ahead before the weapon can be declared operational. He said that further steps remain, including defining the missile’s classification, developing doctrines for its use, and preparing the supporting infrastructure needed for deployment, even as Russian officials assert that the key goals of recent tests have been met.
