Ontario Premier Urges Apology After US Ambassador’s Behavior
(MENAFN) Ontario Premier Doug Ford demanded an apology on Wednesday following a profane outburst by the US ambassador to Canada during a distinguished event in Ottawa.
Ford described Pete Hoekstra’s behavior before an audience of roughly 200 attendees on Monday at the annual Canadian American Business Council gala, held at the National Gallery of Canada, as “unacceptable” and “unbecoming of an ambassador.”
The outburst reportedly stemmed from Ontario’s anti-tariff advertisement that aired over the weekend on American television networks.
The campaign, valued at CAN$75 million, amassed approximately 11.4 billion impressions in the previous week through earned media, including news reports and social media engagement.
An “ad impression” refers to the total number of times a promotional message is displayed to viewers, regardless of whether they engage with it.
Hoekstra’s anger was allegedly directed toward David Paterson, Ontario’s trade representative in Washington, who was in attendance at the gala.
According to a media outlet, Hoekstra “hurled insults” and “swore” at Paterson, who maintained his composure throughout the incident.
Reports also indicated that US President Donald Trump was displeased with the advertisement and subsequently called off trade discussions with Canada.
The Canadian American Business Council gala is a high-profile annual gathering featuring prominent corporate figures and government officials. Among those present were Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Dominic LeBlanc, the minister overseeing Canada–US trade relations.
