Hurricane Melissa poses serious threat to life in Jamaica

(MENAFN) Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Tuesday in southwestern Jamaica, near New Hope, at approximately 1 pm ET (1700 GMT), bringing estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 kph), according to reports. The storm has been classified as extremely dangerous, posing a severe threat to human life, and is considered the strongest hurricane ever to approach Jamaica.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors for their safety.

Jamaica’s military and fire departments are prepared to conduct search and rescue missions once the hurricane moves past the island. “We have equipment that are pre-positioned. Once the request comes in, the team will be ready to go. We have boats, helicopters … you name it,” stated Desmond McKenzie, deputy chairman of the Disaster Risk Management Council, as reported.
