ISU Probes Chinese Ice Dancers Holding Missile Toy

(MENAFN) The International Skating Union (ISU) has initiated an inquiry following an incident at a Grand Prix event where a Chinese ice-dancing duo was filmed holding a toy resembling a ballistic missile.

According to a media outlet, the incident occurred during the Cup of China on October 25.

The footage captured Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing seated in the ‘kiss and cry’ area with a large plush toy shaped like a Chinese missile labeled "DF-61" while awaiting their scores. The pair, along with their coach, briefly lifted the toy before resting it across Xing’s lap.

The DF-61 is a newly revealed Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of carrying nuclear warheads, with an estimated operational range of 12,000 to 15,000 kilometers.

This missile was first displayed during China’s military parade last month, which commemorated the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan and the conclusion of World War II. The parade highlighted advanced technologies from China’s military-industrial sector.

In response to the incident, the ISU informed the media outlet that they are aware "an inappropriate soft toy seems to have been among those thrown onto the ice by spectators" and that it was "subsequently held by the skaters who had just performed." The skating body confirmed it would "investigate [the incident] further."

Ren and Xing ended up in eighth place, with the ice dance title going to American skaters Madison Chock and Evan Bates.

Plush toys shaped like missiles, including those designed after the DF-61, have gained popularity online since the military parade, with soft replicas being sold on platforms like eBay for approximately $30.
