US Bishops Urge Compassion for Immigrants

(MENAFN) The US Conference of Catholic Bishops released a rare “special message” on Wednesday, calling for empathy toward immigrants and condemning what they described as an escalating “climate of fear” driven by the Trump administration’s stringent immigration measures.

During their gathering in Baltimore, the bishops expressed that they were “saddened by the vilification of immigrants” and “troubled by threats against the sanctity of houses of worship and the special nature of hospitals and schools,” noting that immigration enforcement officials are increasingly targeting immigrants in locations historically considered “safe zones.”

“As pastors, we are disturbed when we see among our people a climate of fear and anxiety around questions of profiling and immigration enforcement,” the bishops stated in the special message, marking their first such statement in 12 years.

“We feel compelled now in this environment to raise our voices in defense of God-given human dignity.”

The declaration advocated for substantive reform of US immigration legislation and opposed “indiscriminate mass deportations,” a likely reference to President Donald Trump’s policy shift from aiming to deport “the worst of the worst” to removing gardeners, healthcare workers, and long-term residents without criminal histories.

The bishops also called for an end to “dehumanizing rhetoric and violence,” while acknowledging that nations maintain the right to secure their borders and safeguard public safety.

“We love our country and pray for its peace and prosperity,” they added.

“Human dignity and national security are not in conflict. Both are possible if people of good will work together.”
