Israel pushes US to tone down UN Palestinian state draft
Israeli officials are conducting “last-minute efforts to change the wording of the proposal that will be approved tomorrow in the Security Council regarding the multinational force that will deploy in the Gaza Strip,” the country’s public broadcaster reported.
Advisers to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Foreign Ministry figures have been in talks with members of US President Donald Trump’s team and several Arab officials “to ease the language of the expected resolution,” the outlet added.
Officials cited in the report argue that the Palestinian Authority would be unable to fulfill the “comprehensive reform” required under Trump’s conditions for eventual statehood. Despite this, they still view the draft as “dangerous” and warn that it could trigger unpredictable consequences. The report did not clarify what wording Israel hopes to see adopted.
The United States is promoting the resolution, which calls for deploying a multinational force to Gaza under the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that has been in place since Oct. 10.
According to the broadcaster, the text states that “conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood” once reforms inside the Palestinian Authority are completed.
The draft also outlines a US-led diplomatic track between Israelis and Palestinians aimed at setting a political course toward coexistence. It reportedly envisions coordination between the multinational force, Israel, and Egypt to stabilize Gaza while replacing Hamas governance and the Israeli military presence. A restructured Palestinian police force, trained to operate in Gaza, is also referenced.
On Sunday, several top Israeli ministers — including the defense, foreign, finance, and national security chiefs — publicly reiterated their opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state.
Speaking ahead of the Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu again rejected any path toward Palestinian sovereignty.
“My opposition to the establishment of a State of Palestine has not changed. It stands and remains,” he said, according to a statement from his office.
He insisted Gaza “will be demilitarized, and Hamas will be dismantled,” adding that he has long resisted such proposals.
“I have confronted these attempts for many years, and I am doing so now against pressure from outside and from within,” he said.
Amid the ongoing war in Gaza, several nations recognized Palestinian statehood during UN sessions in September, raising the total to 160 UN member states, according to the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.
Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 69,000 people — the majority women and children — since October 2023, and devastated most of Gaza. Israel continues to hold Palestinian territory, as well as areas in Syria and Lebanon, and opposes the creation of a Palestinian state on land it occupied in 1967.
