Exiled Hasina Condemns Death Verdict as Politically Driven
In a declaration disseminated by her Awami League party via the US-based social networking site Facebook, Hasina asserted that the rulings handed down against her “have been made by a rigged tribunal established and presided over by an unelected government with no democratic mandate.”
Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal imposed death sentences on Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, also in absentia, for a lethal suppression of a student-driven revolt last year that concluded the Awami League’s 15-year tenure.
As many as 1,400 individuals lost their lives amid the unrest.
The tribunal additionally issued a five-year prison term to former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun after he acknowledged his role and agreed to act as a state witness.
Both Hasina and Kamal escaped to India on Aug. 5 of the previous year during the peak of the widespread uprising that overthrew the administration.
Hasina declared that citizens in Bangladesh “can see that the trials conducted by the so-called International Crimes Tribunal were never intended to achieve justice or provide any genuine insight into the events of July and August 2024.”
“Rather, their purpose was to scapegoat the Awami League (party),” she alleged.
The International Crimes Tribunal was initially formed under Hasina’s government in 2010 to prosecute leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for large-scale crimes carried out during the 1971 Liberation War.
