Belgium’s Justice System Gets Strained

(MENAFN) Belgium’s judicial system is under increasing strain as overburdened courts and overcrowded prisons hinder efforts to tackle organized drug crime, raising fears that the country is losing ground against powerful trafficking networks, a news agency reported on Wednesday.

Despite a surge in drug-related violence, the justice system continues to suffer from chronic underfunding and entrenched structural challenges, which experts and officials warn are fueling a growing sense of impunity.

Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden has called for an additional €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in funding to strengthen the system, proposing that half be directed toward daily operations and the other half toward infrastructure.

Her proposals include harsher penalties for drug lords, mandatory drug testing in prisons, and measures requiring wealthy detainees to contribute financially to their incarceration.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Bernard Quintin has stirred controversy by suggesting the possible deployment of the army in major cities to counter escalating drug-related violence.

Organized crime has also posed direct threats to political leaders. During the previous legislative term, one justice minister was forced into hiding after receiving death threats linked to criminal networks.
