Italian PM Meloni starts three-day visit to Japan
During the visit, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to host Meloni for formal talks on Friday. Both leaders have signaled interest in elevating bilateral relations, noting that their countries “share a responsibility to help shape the future international order.” The meeting will be the first time Prime Minister Takaichi has hosted a European leader in Japan since assuming office last October.
Upon Meloni’s arrival in Tokyo, she was welcomed at the airport by a Japanese lawmaker, footage showed. Discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover a wide range of bilateral, regional, and global issues. Among the key topics will be progress on trilateral cooperation with the United Kingdom, particularly the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet under the Global Combat Air Program.
The meeting has also attracted public attention in Japan, where social media users have nicknamed it the “SanaMelo Summit,” highlighting the rarity of a high-level encounter between two conservative female leaders.
The visit coincides with Meloni’s birthday on Thursday. Her previous trip to Japan took place in early 2024, when she held talks with the country’s then-prime minister.
Relations between Italy and Japan have steadily deepened over the years despite geographical distance. Japan has become Italy’s third-largest trading partner in Asia, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $11.6 billion.
