China Records USD34.7B Economic Damage in 2025 Disasters

(MENAFN) China recorded catastrophic economic damage totaling 241.6 billion yuan ($34.7 billion) from natural calamities in 2025, while 763 people died or vanished, the Ministry of Emergency Management disclosed Friday.

The ministry's official statement revealed that approximately 67 million citizens nationwide experienced disaster impacts at varying severity levels, with 763 fatalities or disappearances confirmed.

The cascading crises—predominantly flooding and geological hazards, plus seismic events, typhoons and hailstorms—displaced nearly 3.6 million residents from their homes.

The destruction leveled 57,000 residential structures completely while damaging an additional 709,000 dwellings. Agricultural devastation spread across roughly 6.07 million hectares of cropland.

Beyond flooding and terrain-related emergencies, the ministry highlighted that drought conditions, subfreezing temperatures with snow events, dust storms, vegetation fires, ocean-based hazards, and biological threats also struck different regions throughout the nation at fluctuating intensities.
