Danish FM says Trump’s Greenland tariffs “come as a surprise”
Commenting on the decision, Lars Lokke Rasmussen wrote on social media: "The President’s statement comes as a surprise. Earlier this week, we had a constructive meeting with Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio."
He explained that the expanded military presence in Greenland referenced by Trump is intended to strengthen Arctic security, not escalate tensions. "We agree with the US that we need to do more since the Arctic is no longer a low tension area," Rasmussen said, adding that this is why "we and NATO partners are stepping up in full transparency with our American allies."
His remarks followed Trump’s announcement earlier on Saturday that the United States would introduce new tariffs on imports from eight European nations beginning February 1, with duties set to increase significantly in June. The US president justified the move by citing “national security” concerns connected to Greenland, according to reports.
Greenland, which governs itself while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn heightened attention because of its strategic geographic position and extensive mineral wealth, alongside reported worries about growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs to acquire Greenland for national security reasons and to block potential influence from Russia or China. Denmark and Greenland, however, have consistently dismissed any suggestion of a sale, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the territory.
